Chapter 5 - Shadows at the Gates

Dawn broke over Ashwood Manor in hues of bruised purple and slate grey.

By eight o’clock, the gravel driveway crunched beneath the weight of three black luxury SUVs. Julian stood at the French doors of the grand foyer, watching through the leaded glass as his older brother, Marcus Sterling, stepped out of the lead vehicle. Marcus was flanked by two corporate attorneys in tailored charcoal suits and a woman in state social services attire carrying a leather briefcase.

Emily stood at the landing of the grand staircase, holding Noah snugly wrapped in a neutral cashmere shawl. Her expression was calm, but her fingers were curled protectively around the baby's tiny frame.

"Julian," Marcus called out as the butler opened the massive oak doors. Marcus was taller than Julian, his features sharper, his smile calculated and cold. "We brought Dr. Vance and Mrs. Gable from child protective services. We heard there was an incident with the police last night. We're here to ensure our nephew receives proper institutional care."

"He is in proper care," Julian said, his voice ringing across the marble foyer with a calm authority he hadn't felt in months. "His pediatrician was here through the night. Noah’s condition is stable."

Mrs. Gable, the social worker, stepped forward, adjusting her spectacles. "Mr. Sterling, the police report filed at two in the morning states that the infant suffered an acute hypoxic episode and that an unlicensed domestic employee interfered with emergency protocols. We have an emergency court order for a wellness evaluation at St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital."

"The 'unlicensed employee' saved his life," Julian retorted, stepping directly into the center of the hall, blocking Marcus’s path. "If the EMTs had moved him in the storm, his vitals would have crashed."

Marcus let out a theatrical sigh, turning to the social worker. "You see the state he’s in? Sleep-deprived, paranoid, taking medical advice from housemaids. Clara's death unhinged him. We cannot leave an infant with high medical fragility in this environment."

"The environment is safe," a clear voice interrupted from above.

All eyes turned upward. Emily walked slowly down the curving staircase, each step deliberate and measured. She did not look like a frightened servant; she carried herself with the poise of an ancient guardian.

"Who authorized this woman to speak?" Marcus sneered, waving a dismissive hand. "Julian, dismiss your staff. This is a family matter."

"Emily is not staff anymore," Julian heard himself say. The words left his mouth before his conscious mind could calculate the legal repercussions. "She is Noah's appointed primary caregiver, personally designated in writing by Clara Sterling before her passing."
