Chapter 8 - The Judge's Verdict
The wooden doors swung open, and the court bailiff announced the return of Judge Campbell. The room fell into absolute silence as both parties rose.
Judge Campbell took her seat, arranged her notes, and looked directly across the courtroom.
"This court is faced with a delicate and contentious situation," the judge began, her tone measured and resolute. "The petitioners, Marcus and Victor Sterling, present a valid legal argument regarding the medical protocols that should govern a high-risk infant. However, the court cannot ignore the clear and explicit testamentary intent of the late Clara Sterling."
Marcus leaned forward, a confident smirk touching the corners of his lips.
"Furthermore," Judge Campbell continued, "the court finds the petitioners' sudden and aggressive petition for immediate physical conservatorship to be disproportionate, particularly given the financial conflicts of interest inherent in the Sterling Trust bylaws."
Marcus’s smirk instantly evaporated.
"Physical custody of Noah Sterling shall remain solely with his father, Julian Sterling," the judge ruled firmly.
Julian let out a ragged breath, leaning his knuckles onto the table.
"However," Judge Campbell added, holding up a warning finger, "this custody is conditional upon stringent oversight. The child must have continuous in-home medical supervision by a certified pediatric nurse. In light of the evidence presented, and respecting the expressed wishes of the deceased mother, the court formally appoints Ms. Emily Santos as the court-supervised primary home healthcare custodian, working in direct coordination with Dr. Hayes."
Marcus stood up abruptly, his face flushed with anger. "Your Honor! This is absurd! A housekeeper appointed as a legal medical custodian over family members?"
Bang! The gavel crashed against the wood.

"Sit down, Mr. Sterling, before I hold you in contempt," Judge Campbell snapped. "Ms. Santos has five years of prior certified pediatric nursing experience on record in the state of New York, which your attorneys evidently failed to research. Her credentials are fully verified. This court values proven care over corporate entitlement. Court is adjourned."
Julian turned around. Emily was standing with Noah held securely against her heart. For the first time in weeks, a faint, genuine smile broke through the lines of sorrow on her face.
