Chapter 13 - The Heir's Return

Dawn broke over the skyline of the city, casting a pale, steely light through the glass towers of Vance Global Headquarters.
On the sixty-second floor, the executive boardroom was packed to capacity. The board of directors, corporate attorneys, and high-profile shareholders sat around the massive polished mahogany table in tense, uneasy silence.
At the head of the table stood Victoria Vance, clad in an immaculate pearl-white Chanel suit. Beside her sat Julian's half-brother, Marcus, whose right arm was bandaged—concealing a chemical burn sustained during the night's chaos.
""Ladies and gentlemen of the board,"" Victoria began, her voice carrying the practiced elegance of a seasoned performer, ""it is with profound, unspeakable grief that I convene this emergency session. As of four o'clock this morning, following the tragic cot death of infant Leo, my stepson Julian suffered an apparent mental breakdown and disappeared into the harbor district, where an explosion destroyed his private vehicle.""
Marcus leaned forward, dabbing his eyes with a silk handkerchief. ""The authorities have found no survivors at the scene. Under Article 4 of the Vance Family Trust, in the absence of Julian Vance and any surviving legitimate heirs, the executive chairmanship and controlling shares immediately revert to myself and my mother.""
The company’s chief legal counsel cleared his throat, adjusting his spectacles. ""The documents are prepared, Mrs. Vance. We only require your signature and the certification of death from the county coroner.""
Victoria unscrewed the gold cap of a fountain pen, a triumphant, predatory smile playing at the corners of her mouth. ""A tragic day for the Vance dynasty, but the empire must endure.""
She touched the nib to the signature line.
BANG!
The heavy mahogany double doors of the boardroom were blown off their heavy bronze latches, crashing violently against the walls.
Victoria’s pen slipped, slashing a jagged black mark across the legal document.
Every executive in the room gasped, jumping to their feet in utter pandemonium.
Standing in the doorway, framed by the bright morning sun rising behind the harbor, was Julian Vance.
His dark hair was wild, his face marked with soot and cuts, his left arm held tightly in a medical sling fashioned from a torn black maid's apron. His tailored suit was ruined, but his eyes burned with the ferocious, terrifying majesty of an emperor returned from the dead.
And at his side walked Elena Hayes.

She wore a clean medical lab coat over simple clothes, carrying a healthy, bright-eyed baby Leo resting peacefully in her arms.
""Put the pen down, Victoria,"" Julian said, his voice echoing through the silent boardroom like a death knell. ""The meeting has just begun.""
