Chapter 9 - The Safehouse on the Ridge

The rain came down in violent sheets as the unmarked, armored SUV tore up the twisting asphalt of the coastal ridge. Julian drove with one hand white-knuckling the steering wheel, his eyes constantly scanning the rearview mirror for headlights that never appeared.
In the back seat, Elena held Leo securely in a specialized travel car seat. The baby had finally fallen into a deep, peaceful sleep, unaware of the violence that had painted his father's cellar in blood.
""Where are we going?"" Elena asked, adjusting the collar of her torn dress. A jagged scratch on her collarbone throbbed with a dull ache where the assassin's nails had caught her skin.
""Black Ridge,"" Julian replied, his jaw set like granite. ""A private lodge purchased under a shell corporation three years ago. Not even Victoria or Marcus knows it exists. There are no cameras, no smart devices, and no digital footprints.""
An hour later, the vehicle pulled into a hidden garage beneath a timber-and-stone cabin perched on the edge of a jagged sea cliff. The wind howled through the pines, drowning out the roar of the surf below.
Inside, Julian built a fire in the stone hearth, the warm orange embers pushing back the damp chill of the storm.
""Sit,"" Julian commanded gently, pointing to a leather sofa.
He returned from the kitchen with a first-aid kit, warm water, and clean towels. Without asking, he knelt on the floor before her, taking a damp cloth and gently wiping away the dry blood on her shoulder.
Elena stiffened at his proximity. The ruthless billionaire she had observed from afar was gone; in his place was a man whose touch was surprisingly tender, almost reverent.
""I’m sorry,"" Julian whispered, his thumb lightly grazing the edge of her collarbone as he applied an antiseptic swab. ""You came into my home to save my son, and I dragged you into a war zone.""
""I made my choice the moment I touched that baby,"" Elena said softly, looking down into his exhausted, handsome face. ""I took an oath, Julian. A medical license is just a piece of paper. The oath doesn't expire when corrupt men take away your badge.""
Julian looked up, their eyes locking in the firelight. For a moment, the tension between them crackled louder than the burning logs.
""My wife... she didn't just die from complications,"" Julian confessed, his voice dropping to a raw whisper. ""Arthur Sterling attended her delivery. He told me her uterus ruptured. Now... I wonder if she was poisoned too.""
Elena’s heart ached for him. She reached out, her fingers instinctively covering the back of his hand. ""We will find the truth, Julian. Together.""
Suddenly, Julian’s encrypted satellite phone vibrated violently against the coffee table.
Julian snatched it up, pressing the speaker button.
A woman's hysterical, sobbing voice burst through the static:

""Mr. Vance! Please, you have to help us! Dr. Sterling... they're trying to kill him! They're at the Northside medical warehouse—""
A sickening thud echoed over the line, followed by the sound of glass shattering and a man's strangled scream.
