Chapter 1 - The Breath of Frost

The silence inside the grand salon of the Vance estate was thicker than the winter fog rolling against the bay windows. Two paramedics stood paralyzed over the brass crib, their faces hollow, hands hovering over thermal packs and portable warming pads. On the silk carpet, Julian Vance knelt like a broken god, his bespoke black shirt rumpled, tears carving pale tracks through the shadow of his stubble.
His newborn son, Leo, was turning the color of skimmed milk. The infant’s chest did not rise. The continuous flat drone of the portable monitor had already been silenced out of grim respect.
""Time of death,"" the lead paramedic began, his voice dry and hollow, ""ten forty-eight—""
""Get your hands off him!""
The scream shattered the salon's suffocating stillness. Elena burst through the mahogany double doors, her maid’s black uniform rustling as she sprinted across the Persian rug. The lace of her headband had come loose, dark strands whipping across her fierce, wild eyes.
""Step back, miss!"" a uniformed police officer barked, reaching for his utility belt. ""Step away from the body!""
Elena didn’t flinch. She shoved the officer’s shoulder aside with shocking leverage, dropped to her knees beside the crib, and ripped the battery-powered warming blankets off the infant.
""Stop warming him!"" she hissed under her breath, her fingers instantly finding the tiny carotid artery. ""You’re cooking his brain stem. The cellular edema is suffocating his autonomic reflex!""
""What... what are you doing?"" Julian choked out, his voice cracked with raw agony. He reached a trembling hand toward her apron, terrified she was desecrating his child’s final moments. ""Please... he's gone...""
Elena didn't look at Julian. Her gaze was locked on the baby’s lips, tinged with a faint, dusky violet. ""He isn't dead, Mr. Vance. But if they keep raising his core temperature, he will be in three minutes.""
Before anyone could tackle her, Elena plunged her hands into the silver ice bucket resting on the bar cart. She scooped a handful of crushed ice, wrapped it inside a linen napkin, and pressed it directly against the back of the newborn’s neck and skull, while initiating rapid, two-finger compressions against the center of his tiny sternum.

""She’s insane! Restrain her!"" the lead paramedic shouted, reaching for Elena’s hair.
At that exact second, beneath Elena’s numbed fingertips, a tiny, involuntary spasm convulsed through the infant's ribs—followed by the sudden, terrifying sound of a click from behind her as Julian’s bodyguard racked the slide of a pistol against her temple.
