Chapter 1 - Whispers in the Champagne Air

The polished floorboards groaned beneath Liam’s dress shoes as his daughter, Clara, pointed an accusing, chubby finger toward his chest. Laughter rippled across the wedding party. Lanterns swayed overhead in the evening breeze, casting golden halos across the lawn. Liam knelt until he met Clara’s saucer-wide eyes, brushing a stray blonde lock behind her ear.

""You think you can out-groove your old man, bug?"" he whispered, his voice teasing yet tender.

Clara puffed her cheeks, clutching the tulle of her pale flower-girl gown. ""Mommy said you got no rhythm. Mommy said real dancers spin!""

Liam’s chest tightened at the word. Mommy. It had been fourteen months since Sarah passed away, leaving behind an aching void disguised as quiet suburban afternoons. Liam had dragged Clara to this wedding hoping to spark joy back into both their lives. Looking around, the guests smiled warmly, but pity lurked in their eyes.

Suddenly, Clara twirled, her tiny white shoes slipping on the slick wood. Liam caught her effortlessly, swinging her into an impromptu waltz that drew spontaneous applause from the surrounding tables. She squealed in delight, wrapping small arms tightly around his neck. For a brief second, Liam felt Sarah’s presence standing at the edge of the lawn, cheering them on with that radiant half-smile.

Then, a vibration hummed against Liam’s ribcage. His cell phone buzzed in the inner pocket of his navy blazer—three rapid pulses followed by a long silence. It was an alert protocol he hadn’t felt in four years.

Setting Clara down gently by the bride's table, Liam pulled out the device. The screen showed an encrypted message from an unknown overseas number.

The message contained only a single sentence: Sarah’s accident was no accident; check her studio locker before they burn it.
