Chapter 3 - Footsteps in the Dust

""Step back from the locker, Mr. Vance,"" a flat, monotone voice ordered from the shadows.

Liam didn’t move. His military training instinctively calculated the distance: ten feet, concrete stairs, zero cover. He raised his hands slowly, keeping his palms open and visible in the blinding glare of the intruder's tactical beam.

""Who sent you?"" Liam asked, keeping his breathing steady and low.

""Curiosity killed your wife. Don't make it an inherited family trait,"" the figure replied, advancing a single measured pace forward. The silhouette revealed a lean man wearing dark tactical gear, suppressed pistol held in a low-ready stance.

Liam calculated his only opening. With a lightning sweep of his left arm, he knocked a shelf of metal paint cans off the rack beside him. The heavy tins crashed down the metal stairs with an ear-splitting clatter.

The intruder flinched, adjusting his weapon upward. In that fractured half-second, Liam grabbed the black binder, slammed the metal locker door directly into the man’s gun hand, and charged forward. The pistol fired with a muffled thwip, the round biting into the drywall inches from Liam’s ear.

Liam tackled the intruder into the railing. The two men wrestled violently on the narrow landing. Liam threw a short, brutal elbow into the man’s jaw, felt cartilage give, and stripped the weapon from his grip.

He didn't stay to interrogate. Knowing reinforcements were likely nearby, Liam scrambled down the stairs and sprinted into the foggy night. He tossed the binder into the passenger seat, turned the ignition, and sped into the darkness.

As the car gained speed, Liam opened the binder with one hand. Taped to the first page was an aerial photograph of his daughter Clara playing in her preschool playground, dated just three days ago.
