Chapter 14 - The Final Broadcast

The helicopter touched down fifty yards behind the stalled truck, blinding them with its tactical searchlight. Six heavily armed operators stepped onto the road, their weapons trained directly on the vehicle’s cabin.
Through the truck's loudspeaker, a commanding voice boomed over the wind: ""Exit the vehicle with your hands raised. Surrender the drive, and the child will be placed into state custody safely.""
Liam looked back at Clara. Her dress was ruined, covered in soot and mud, but her hazel eyes held an extraordinary calm. She reached out and patted Liam's cheek with her small hand.
""Daddy, are we gonna dance now?"" she asked softly.
Liam swallowed the lump in his throat, a tear cutting a clean path through the dirt on his face. ""In a minute, baby. Daddy just has to finish the song.""
Liam turned to the dashboard. The upload reached 98 percent. 99 percent.

At that exact second, Liam’s phone buzzed with an emergency news alert. Then Marcus’s phone buzzed. Then the radios of the tactical operators outside crackled with chaotic transmissions.
The voice over their tactical frequency changed instantly, frantic and disoriented: ""All units, stand down! Stand down immediately! The Governor’s office has just been raided by federal marshals. Cease all operational engagements!""

The tactical operators paused, glancing at each other beneath their helmets. The spotlights suddenly tilted toward the ground. Slowly, the commander lowered his rifle, raising a single hand in surrender as the sound of distant federal sirens echoed across the valley.
Liam let out a long, ragged breath, resting his forehead against the steering wheel. It was over.
