Chapter 10 - THE METROPOLITAN GALA

The grand ballroom of the Metropolitan Pavilion was an ocean of black tuxedos, flowing chiffon, and crystalline champagne flutes. Giant crystal chandeliers hung from forty-foot ceilings, casting dazzling prisms across the elite of high society. At the center of the raised dais stood a massive architectural model of the Carrington Harbor Project, concealed beneath a ceremonial velvet drape.
Richard Vance stood near the stage, surrounded by international investors and journalists, holding court like a reigning monarch.
"The visionary concept behind this project represents the pinnacle of modern sustainable design," Richard proclaimed to a group of reporters, gesturing toward Victoria, who stood beside Julian Carrington, glowing in her emerald gown and diamonds. "My daughter Victoria spent two years researching coastal aerodynamics to achieve this masterpiece."
Julian Carrington, a handsome man in his early thirties with an intelligent, discerning gaze, smiled politely. "It is certainly ambitious, Richard. However, I must admit, my engineering team still has minor reservations regarding the roof load calculations during hurricane-level wind shear. Victoria assured me those were settled?"
"Completely settled, Julian," Victoria answered smoothly, offering her most enchanting smile. "Every stress vector has been triple-checked against maximum marine turbulence. You have my personal guarantee."
Suddenly, the house lights flickered twice. The murmur of two thousand guests began to subside as the master of ceremonies stepped to the podium.
"Distinguished guests, honored patrons," the announcer’s voice boomed over the state-of-the-art sound system. "Before our keynote presentation and the official contract signing between Vance Global and Carrington Maritime, the Metropolitan Architectural Review Board has granted a mandatory procedural appearance to the primary patent holder of the Vance Structural Systems."
Richard frowned, his champagne glass freezing halfway to his lips. He turned to his chief legal counsel standing behind him. "What is this? What patent holder?"
"I don't know, sir," the lawyer stammered, frantically scanning his tablet. "Marcus Vance filed an emergency structural patent transfer this afternoon under the auspices of an international design firm."
The double doors at the back of the auditorium clicked open.
Silence fell over the room like an icy curtain. The crowd parted naturally, murmurs rippling outward like waves on water. Walking down the center aisle, her posture regal and completely unhurried, was a woman dressed in a minimalist, floor-length gown of liquid midnight velvet. Beside her walked Dr. Julian Hayes in a sharp charcoal suit, and Marcus Vance, his cane striking the polished stone with rhythmic, ominous authority.

Richard’s eyes bulged. Eleanor gasped, dropping her champagne flute, the crystal shattering violently against the floor. Victoria’s face drained of every drop of color, turning as white as bone.
Clara had arrived.
