Chapter 9 - INVENTING AVOST

In the quiet sanctuary of Marcus’s workshop, an entirely different kind of preparation was taking place. Over the span of two intense weeks, Clara, Marcus, and Julian did not merely prepare a defense—they orchestrated a counter-offensive.

"If you go in there as Clara Vance," Julian warned as he pinned photographic evidence of her chemical burns to a corkboard, "Richard’s security will tackle you before you clear the foyer. His lawyers will serve an emergency gag order, claim you are trespassing, and have you sedated under the Baker Act."

"He's right," Marcus agreed, chewing on his unlit pipe. "We cannot fight Richard on the battlefield he owns. We have to change the rules."

Clara stood by the drafting table, holding up a sleek, architectural rendering board made of black titanium. "Then we don't fight as Clara Vance. We fight as Avost."

"Avost?" Julian raised an eyebrow.

"Ancient Norse for retribution," Clara explained, her eyes shining with quiet brilliance. "Three years ago, when Father refused to let me submit my sustainable marine architecture concepts to the Scandinavian Design Expo, I entered them anonymously under the studio name Studio Avost. We won the Nordic Crown Gold Medal, but nobody knew who was behind the firm because I funneled all communications through an encrypted Swiss legal trust."

Marcus’s eyes widened with delighted astonishment. "The Nordic Crown? The architectural community has been hunting for the founder of Studio Avost for three years! Julian Carrington himself publicly stated in Architectural Digest that his dream was to hire the mind behind Avost for his maritime development!"

"Exactly," Clara said, leaning forward. "And tomorrow morning, Marcus, as a legacy patent holder, will officially inform the Metropolitan Arts Council that Studio Avost has acquired the proprietary structural patents for the Carrington Harbor project. They are legally mandated to allow the patent holder ten minutes to present their structural integrity report before the final contract signing."

Julian looked at her, his heart swelling with an admiration that went far deeper than friendship. She was taking her tragedy and transforming it into an unassailable fortress of intellect and law.

"And how does Clara Vance enter that room?" Julian asked softly.

Clara walked over to a full-length mirror leaning against the brick wall. She reached into a box on the counter and pulled out an exquisite, custom-made mask: a half-face piece crafted from hammered, lightweight silver, shaped like fractured frost.

She placed the silver against her left cheek. The polished metal didn't hide her scars; it framed them, tracing the exact topography of her burns, transforming the evidence of violence into a radiant, unapologetic sculpture of defiance.

"I won't hide what they did to me," Clara declared, looking into the mirror with unwavering resolve. "The scars are not my shame. They are their crime."
