Chapter 11 - THE MASK OF TRUTH

Clara walked toward the stage with steady, measured grace. With every step, the whispers in the ballroom multiplied into a deafening roar. The left side of her face shimmered beneath the hammered silver mask, reflecting the chandelier lights like fractured lightning, while her right side remained bare, serene, and recognizable to every person who had known the Vance family.

"Stop her!" Richard hissed frantically to his private security team. "She is mentally unstable! Remove her from the premises immediately!"

Two burly security guards lunged toward Clara, but before they could lay a hand on her, four uniformed officers from the Municipal Fraud and Safety Task Force stepped out from the wings, blocking their path.

"Stand down," Marcus Vance commanded, stepping onto the stage stairs. "Miss Clara Vance is here as the designated representative of Studio Avost and holds full legal standing under Section 12 of the Municipal Architecture Charter. Touch her, Richard, and you will be arrested on live television for obstruction."

Julian Carrington stepped forward, his brow furrowed in utter confusion. "Clara? Richard told us you were in a clinic in Zurich."

Clara stepped up to the secondary podium, adjusting the microphone with calm precision. Her voice, amplified through twenty surround-sound speakers, was clear, rich, and entirely devoid of fear.

"I was not in Zurich, Mr. Carrington," Clara spoke, her hazel eyes locking directly onto Julian Carrington before sweeping across the terrified faces of her parents and sister. "I was thirty blocks from this building, recovering from second- and third-degree chemical burns."

A collective, horrified gasp rippled through the audience.

With a slow, deliberate movement, Clara reached up and unfastened the silk ribbons behind her hair. She lowered the silver mask, resting it gently upon the wooden lectern.

The full extent of the scars was revealed under the merciless four-thousand-lumen stage spotlights. The crimson and pale raised ridges across her cheek, the delicate skin permanently transformed by industrial acid, lay bare before two thousand of the city’s most influential citizens and twenty high-definition broadcast cameras.

"On October 14th," Clara continued, her tone steady as a surgeon’s scalpel, "two ounces of industrial trichloroacetic acid were poured into my facial serum inside my family's home. When I collapsed in agony, my father told me to cover myself because I was being dramatic. When I begged for an ambulance, my family left me on the bathroom floor so they would not be late for dinner."

Eleanor gripped Richard’s arm so hard her knuckles turned grey. "She's lying! She's hysterical! Turn off the audio!" Eleanor shrieked, losing every shred of her aristocratic composure.

"I have the forensic toxicology report from St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital," Clara said calmly, as Julian Hayes plugged a flash drive into the podium console. Instantly, the massive five-story projection screen behind the stage flickered to life.
