Chapter 12 - The Iron Blood

The cellar shook as the heavy wheels of law enforcement vehicles tore through Clara’s front garden beds. Red and blue emergency lights strobed through the shattered floorboards above, painting the damp stone walls in vivid, rhythmic flashes of police crimson and cobalt. Megaphones echoed through the rainy night, a voice booming across the lawn:
""This is the Federal Bureau of Investigation. All occupants, drop your weapons and exit through the front entrance with your hands visible. The property is fully contained.""
Julian’s voice drifted down from the kitchen floor above, weak, strained, but laced with triumphant spite. ""It’s over, Emily! I have federal protective custody! You step out of that cellar with that drive, and you’re classified as a domestic terrorist!""
Emily cursed, drawing a compact flash-bang grenade from her tactical webbing. ""Mom, listen to me. If the feds take that drive, Julian’s parent company claims proprietary ownership through eminent domain. Sarah gets zero credit, zero royalties, and she’ll spend the next ten years in federal depositions while Julian’s board patents the drug under their own name. We take the drainage tunnel now.""
Clara looked down at Sarah. Sarah was trembling, her skin taking on an alarming bluish tint around her lips. Maya was sobbing silently, pressing a clean kitchen towel Clara had tossed her against the torn surgical wound, but the blood was soaking through faster than Maya could apply pressure.
""Sarah can't make the tunnel,"" Clara said flatly. ""She’ll bleed out before you reach the mill.""
""Then give me the drive,"" Emily pleaded, her eyes wide, extending an open hand toward Clara. ""I’ll run the tunnel alone. I’ll draw the feds away from the property. They’ll chase me across the ridge, and the paramedics will have to treat Sarah here. It’s the only way she survives!""
Clara stared into her younger daughter’s eyes. She searched for the child she had raised, looking for any trace of familial love beneath the layers of tactical training and ruthless ambition. Did Emily want to save Sarah, or did she just need an excuse to take the multi-million-dollar prototype and run?
""Nana, don't,"" Maya whispered, looking up from her mother’s side. ""Aunt Emily lied to us. She's the one who gave Julian our address.""
Emily froze, her hand still outstretched. The silence between them grew heavier than the stone walls of the cellar.
""You gave him the location?"" Clara asked, her voice deadly quiet.
""I didn't think he’d come with wet-work contractors!"" Emily defended herself, her voice pitching higher. ""I thought he’d send legal process servers! I needed Sarah here so I could secure the physical drive before Julian frozen her accounts!""

Clara didn't shout. She lowered the sledgehammer slowly, setting the heavy iron head down onto the dirt floor with deliberate finality. ""You brought war to your sister's doorstep, Emily.""
Above them, the thunder of tear-gas canisters firing into the kitchen sounded once more, followed by the heavy, coordinated stomping of federal tactical units clearing the ground floor.
