Chapter 5 - Blood on the Pine

Maya kicked violently with her free foot, her heel connecting with the bridge of the man’s nose. The intruder let out a muffled roar of pain, his grip slipping just enough for Maya to wrench her leg free. She scrambled upward, skinning her knees against the rough stair treads, clutching the plastic case tightly against her ribs.
""Upstairs! Lock the bathroom door!"" Clara yelled, raising the cast-iron skillet again as Julian hauled himself up from the floor.
Julian’s face was smeared with dust, his pristine charcoal blazer torn at the seam. The cold mask of corporate professionalism had completely melted away, replaced by a vicious, bare-toothed snarl. He wiped a smear of blood from his split upper lip and glared at Sarah, who was struggling to push herself up from the floorboards, gasping for air.
""You miserable bitch,"" Julian hissed, drawing a sleek, compact semi-automatic from an inner holster he had kept concealed until now. ""You think you’re getting out of this valley alive? Neither of you leaves this county without signing those release forms.""
""Shoot me, then,"" Sarah whispered, her voice trembling but steady as she leaned against the bottom step, blood soaking through the grey knit of her sweater. ""Shoot me and watch the proprietary encryption keys auto-delete from the cloud servers in twenty minutes. You know the protocols, Julian. Without my biometrics, that drive in Maya's hand is nothing more than three hundred dollars’ worth of scrap aluminum.""
Julian’s thumb hovered over the safety of his weapon. His jaw worked, muscles knotting as he calculated the risks. Sarah was right. The clinical trials, the patent filings, the synthetic enzyme synthesis—everything that Julian’s consortium had invested forty million dollars to acquire—was locked behind a rolling cryptographic sequence tied to her vitals.
The first intruder, nursing his fractured wrist, blocked the kitchen exit, while the second man stood at the base of the stairs, wiping blood from his broken nose. They formed a tight, inescapable triangle around Clara and Sarah.
""You need her alive,"" Clara said coldly, stepping beside her daughter, her body acting as a human barrier between Julian's gun and Sarah's chest. ""Which means you have zero leverage in this house. You touch my granddaughter, and Sarah stops cooperating entirely.""
May you like
Julian lowered the gun by a fraction of an inch, his eyes narrowing into slits. ""I don't need all of her alive, Clara. A severed finger still unlocks a biometric pad. Bring the girl down here, or I start taking this family apart piece by piece.""
Suddenly, the house went pitch black. The hum of the refrigerator died instantly. Outside, the headlights of the idling truck flickered twice and died, plunging the entire property into an unnatural, suffocating darkness.
