Chapter 8 - The Root Cellar

The red laser beams danced across the rain-slicked porch, slicing through the darkness of the broken foyer. Two distinct laser dots converged on the wooden frame inches from Emily's shoulder.
""Down!"" Clara yelled, dragging Sarah by her sleeve toward the back pantry where the heavy oak cellar door was hidden beneath a braided rug.
Emily fired three suppressive rounds through the front window, shattering the remaining panes into a shower of crystalline shards. Outside, a voice barked an order through a tactical radio, followed by the dull thud-thud-thud of 40mm tear-gas canisters punching through the living room ceiling. Thick, acrid grey smoke erupted instantly, stinging Clara’s eyes and burning Sarah’s already inflamed throat.
""Maya, get in!"" Clara threw open the trapdoor, revealing the steep, narrow wooden steps leading down into the subterranean darkness of the century-old fruit cellar. Maya didn't hesitate; she squeezed through the opening, the hard drive clutched securely in her hand.
Julian lunged forward through the gathering fog, aiming his weapon blindly toward the trapdoor. ""Drop the case, Maya! Don't let her take it!""
Clara spun around. With the last reserve of strength in her aging arms, she swung the cast-iron skillet sideways, slamming it squarely into Julian's outstretched gun arm. The metal collided with bone with a sickening crack. The gun flew from his grip, tumbling down into the cellar darkness. Julian screamed in pain, clutching his fractured forearm as he dropped to one knee on the smoke-filled linoleum.
""That's for my house,"" Clara spat, grabbing Sarah around the waist and lowering her into the cellar opening.
Emily backed toward the pantry, firing short, controlled bursts toward the front door to keep the advancing tactical unit pinned behind the maples. ""Mom, pull the door shut behind you! The bolts on the inside are forged iron! They can't breach it without heavy breaching charges!""
""What about you?"" Clara demanded, pausing on the third step down, her face illuminated by the eerie glow of the gas canisters above.
May you like
""I’m buying you twenty minutes,"" Emily said coldly, ejecting an empty magazine and slapping a fresh one home. ""Take the drainage tunnel at the back of the root cellar. It leads out past the old mill. Don't stop for anything until you reach the highway.""
Before Clara could protest, Emily slammed the heavy oak door shut from above, and the sound of the exterior iron sliding bolt slammed into place, locking Clara, Sarah, and Maya into the freezing, earthen blackness below. Above their heads, the deafening thunder of fully automatic gunfire erupted, shaking the dirt ceiling and raining loose soil down onto their hair.
