Chapter 2 - The Red Light in the Pines

Clara’s gaze flickered instinctively toward the front window. Through the sheer curtains and past the dripping branches of the ancient maples, a set of dull red parking lights sat idling at the edge of the gravel driveway. The vehicle was completely blacked out, its engine a low, rhythmic vibration that seemed to travel through the foundations of the house.
""Who is that?"" Maya demanded, her voice cracking as she scrambled off the couch and pressed her back against the kitchen island, clutching an unzipped backpack to her chest. ""Nana, who is in that car?""
""Nobody who has any business here,"" Clara said, though a cold tremor seized the base of her neck. She knew every neighbor on this dead-end mountain road; they drove rusted pickups and battered Subarus. Nobody drove an unmarked, heavy-duty utility vehicle with tinted commercial plates unless they were serving an eviction notice or carrying out an extraction.
Julian smiled, a slow, predatory tightening of his lips. ""Consider them observers. To ensure Sarah doesn't suffer another... sudden domestic accident. We wouldn't want the medical board asking why an active patent holder disappeared from postoperative observation, would we?""
Sarah let out a broken, ragged sob from the third step of the stairs. ""I didn't steal the drive, Julian! I told you—it was destroyed during the crash! There’s nothing left to take!""
""You always were an amateur liar, sweetheart,"" Julian said, his tone sickeningly gentle. ""You wouldn't have survived that ditch if you hadn't secured the hardware first. You value your life's work far more than your life.""
Clara took a deliberate step toward Julian, the cast-iron skillet raised just high enough to serve as an immediate shield—or a blunt weapon. ""You talk about accidents, Julian, but you ran her car off Route 9. Don't speak about contracts in my home. You tried to kill my daughter.""
Julian’s expression finally hardened, the polished charm slipping to reveal the ruthless corporate fixer beneath. ""If I had wanted Sarah dead, Mrs. Vance, she wouldn't be standing on your stairs with clean stitches and clean lungs. I wanted the drive. Now, you have five minutes to hand over the flash storage, or those two men outside will come in and conduct a room-by-room inventory. And trust me, they won't take their shoes off.""

""Over my dead body,"" Clara hissed.
Julian didn't answer with words. He simply lifted his right hand and tapped two fingers against the glass pane of the open door. Across the yard, the headlights of the idling truck suddenly snapped on, bathing the living room in blinding white halogen light, followed by the heavy thud of two car doors slamming shut in unison.
