Chapter 13 - Blood and Betrayal

The faint smile on Marcus’s face vanished completely. The weary, heroic expression he had worn for the past three hours stripped away, revealing an emptiness far more terrifying than Julian’s open rage or Sophia’s corporate malice.

He didn't raise his gun, but he stepped sideways, blocking the exit toward Berth 9.

""You always were too sharp for your own good, Clara,"" Marcus said quietly, his voice devoid of the earlier warmth. ""That’s why Julian could never handle you.""

Clara’s world tilted on its axis. ""You were working with them all along.""

""Not with Julian,"" Marcus corrected calmly, wiping the blood from his brow with a silk handkerchief he pulled from his pocket. ""Julian is an idiot. A weak, vain fool who thought he could play financial chess with money he didn't earn. And Sophia is an arrogant socialite whose family is sinking in debt.""

""Then who, Marcus?"" Clara demanded, her voice shaking with righteous fury. ""Eleanor?""

""Mother understands how power works,"" Marcus said, gesturing toward the shadows behind him.

Footsteps sounded from the darkness. Emerging from behind a rusted yellow container was Eleanor Vance herself. She had traded her emerald wedding gown for a long black wool overcoat, an umbrella held over her head by her silent chauffeur. Her silver-blonde hair was perfectly dry, her posture as imperious as a queen inspecting a conquered dungeon.

""You played your part adequately, Marcus,"" Eleanor said smoothly, stopping five paces away. ""Though you were far too clumsy with that truck. You nearly damaged the merchandise.""

""The merchandise?"" Clara gasped, looking from the matriarch to the detective.

""The girl, Clara,"" Eleanor said, looking at Lily with cold, clinical detachment. ""Did you really think I would allow a half-breed bastard to inherit the Vance empire? The trust requires a biological heir to activate the offshore funds. But it doesn't specify which Vance controls the child.""

""Marcus is going to adopt her,"" Clara realized, a cold wave of horror crashing over her. ""Once you kill me and send Julian to prison for fraud... Marcus becomes the heroic guardian who rescued the stolen heir. And you control Marcus.""

""Marcus understands the cost of legacy,"" Eleanor said, nodding slightly. ""Julian was always expendable. Now, Clara. Hand over the flash drive, and give me my granddaughter. Do it quietly, and I'll ensure your burial is dignified.""

From behind the containers, Julian stepped into view, his silver tuxedo torn, his face bruised, and a heavy revolver gripped in his trembling hand. ""Mother... you told me we were just getting the papers signed! You said Marcus was tracking the stolen funds!""

Julian stared at his brother and his mother, suddenly realizing he wasn't the master of the hunt—he was just another goat tied to the slaughtering post.
