Chapter 6 - The Encrypted Ledger

The small apartment on the north side was cold and quiet. Clara carried the sleeping child into her tiny bedroom, gently laying Lily onto the pastel sheets. She unzipped the cream flower girl dress, hanging it in the closet like the relic of a war zone it had become, and pulled the soft quilt over her daughter’s chest. Lily sighed in her sleep, her forehead finally relaxed, free of tears.
Clara closed the bedroom door to a sliver and walked into the modest kitchen. Her hands were finally shaking. The adrenaline that had sustained her through the ballroom confrontation was draining away, leaving behind a hollow, aching fatigue.
She poured a glass of tap water, set it on the laminate counter, and took out the micro flash drive. It was unmarked, completely sterile, except for a tiny laser-engraved serial number on the casing.
Clara retrieved her old laptop from the desk, turned off the Wi-Fi card to prevent remote tracking, and inserted the drive into the USB port. The drive initialized with a quiet beep. A single partition opened, containing dozens of PDF documents and a folder labeled PROJECT HESPERUS.
She clicked the first document. It was not insurance fraud documents, nor was it custody paperwork.
It was an offshore corporate registry from the Cayman Islands. Listed under the primary shareholders were Julian Vance, Eleanor Vance... and Sophia’s father, Arthur Sterling. The dates went back six years. Clara scrolled frantically through financial balance sheets showing millions of dollars being transferred through shell corporations—money funneled directly from the municipal infrastructure contracts overseen by the city comptroller’s office.
Clara’s breath hitched. Julian hadn't just tried to frame Lily to win a custody dispute or avoid child support. The entire marriage to Sophia was a staged merger designed to launder thirty million dollars of embezzled public funds before the federal audit began next week.
Lily’s alleged theft was meant to create a chaotic family scandal, giving Julian an excuse to flee the country with the laundered funds disguised as an overseas personal retreat while the family sorted the ‘disgrace’ in private courts.
Clara clicked into the subfolder. At the bottom was an audio file recorded just two hours before the wedding. She plugged in her headphones and hit play.
A woman's crisp, calculating voice filled her ears: ""Make sure the ring is found on the girl. If Clara is arrested on the premises, the media will feast on the scandal, and the comptroller will delay the audit review by three weeks. Julian, do not fail me on this.""

It wasn't Eleanor’s voice.
It was Sophia.
