Chapter 14 - The Final Bargain

Julian’s arrival shattered the calculated silence of the pier. He looked wild, his hair plastered to his forehead by the driving rain, the revolver shaking wildly in his grip.
""You set me up,"" Julian whispered, looking at Marcus, then at his mother. ""The police at the church... the false reports... you leaked the footage to Marcus so he could arrest me!""
""Shut up, Julian,"" Marcus commanded, not even turning his head. ""Put the gun down before you shoot yourself in the foot.""
""No!"" Julian screamed, his voice cracking with hysterics. ""I built those shell companies! I signed the agreements with Sophia! You pushed me out of the trust, Mother! You promised me everything if I married her!""
""You proved yourself incompetent the moment you let Clara see through your pathetic flower basket scheme,"" Eleanor said, her voice dripping with venom. ""You are weak, Julian. Just like your father. Now lower that weapon and let Marcus finish this.""
Clara saw her only window. While Eleanor and Marcus were focused on the unraveling, armed idiot in front of them, Clara slowly backed toward the edge of the concrete pier. Behind her, the black harbor waters churned against the wooden pilings fifteen feet below.
""Julian,"" Clara called out, keeping her voice low and steady.
Julian’s frantic eyes darted toward her.
""She's going to kill you, Julian,"" Clara said, her voice piercing through the wind. ""Look at Marcus. He has the IA dismissal ready. The second I'm dead, Marcus will shoot you, claim you killed me in a psychotic rage over the fraud, and claim he shot you in self-defense. You won't even make it to a jail cell.""
Julian’s breathing turned ragged. He looked at Marcus’s drawn weapon, at his mother’s utterly indifferent face, and realized Clara was speaking the absolute, undeniable truth.
""Drop the gun, Julian,"" Marcus repeated, taking a step toward his brother, his finger tightening on the trigger.
""Stay back!"" Julian shrieked.
Julian pulled the trigger.
The gunshot was an ear-splitting crack against the metal containers. Marcus grunted, staggering sideways as the bullet grazed his shoulder. Instantly, Marcus returned fire with clinical, deadly accuracy. Two shots echoed through the fog—Julian collapsed to the wet concrete with a muffled gasp, clutching his chest as dark blood seeped through his silver tuxedo.
Eleanor didn't even flinch at her son's fall. She turned to Marcus. ""Kill her. Now.""
Marcus raised his weapon, leveling the black barrel directly at Clara’s forehead.

""Goodbye, Clara,"" Marcus said.
Clara didn't scream. She didn't beg. She locked eyes with the man who had pretended to be her savior, tightened her arms around Lily, and threw herself backward off the edge of the pier into the freezing, churning abyss below.
