Chapter 3 - The Price of a Diamond

The man in the dark trench coat stepped forward, his leather shoes clicking methodically against the marble. Detective Marcus Vance—Julian’s estranged older brother and the black sheep of the family—pulled a golden shield from his lapel.

""Good evening, Mother. Julian,"" Marcus said smoothly, his eyes sweeping across the frozen tableau of high society. ""Pardon the interruption, but we received an automated alert regarding grand larceny and intentional framing on commercial premises.""

""Marcus!"" Eleanor hissed, her patrician composure cracking into jagged shards. ""You dare bring the police to your own brother's wedding? Call off these men this instant! This is a family matter.""

""It stopped being a family matter when Julian filed a sworn police report thirty minutes ago claiming an eight-hundred-thousand-dollar heirloom was stolen,"" Marcus replied, stepping between Julian and the altar. ""Filing a false police report is a felony, little brother. Tampering with evidence to defraud an insurance carrier and framed custody proceedings makes it federal.""

Murmurs rippled through the guests like a brushfire. Phones were already raised, recording every second despite Eleanor's frantic glares.

""Custody?"" Sophia asked, her voice dangerously quiet. She turned her cold stare toward Julian. ""What does this have to do with custody, Julian? You told me Clara was just an eccentric cousin.""

Clara tightened her grip on Lily. ""Tell her the truth, Julian. Or should I show the court the paternity papers you’ve been fighting to seal for five years?""

Julian lunged forward, all pretenses of high-society elegance dropping away into savage desperation. ""Shut your mouth, Clara! You swore you'd never bring that into this room!""

""Step back, Mr. Vance,"" the uniformed officer warned, his hand resting firmly on the taser at his hip.

Julian halted, chest heaving. His silver tuxedo jacket hung askew. He looked around the room—at the elite investors who funded his tech startup, at the society doyennes who governed Eleanor’s social circle, and finally at Sophia, whose expression had curdled from heartbreak to absolute revulsion.

""Sophia, please,"" Julian pleaded, extending a trembling hand. ""I did it for our future. Clara was going to sue for back child support and stock shares. If she was convicted of felony theft, she'd lose all legal standing. I did it for us!""

Sophia looked at the antique ring still sitting on the cold floor. She reached up, unclasped the six-carat diamond engagement ring from her finger, and tossed it into the spilled champagne.

""The wedding is over,"" Sophia announced, her voice echoing to the rafters. She turned to leave, but before she took three steps, Julian grabbed her wrist with terrifying force.
