Chapter 1 - The Altar of Ruin

The heavy stone nave of St. Jude’s Cathedral fell into a suffocating silence, punctuated only by the distant drumming of torrential rain against the stained glass. Julian stood frozen at the foot of the altar. The damp parchment in his trembling hand felt as heavy as lead. Below the faded ink of Victoria Hale’s elegant signature lay a sum of money large enough to bury a human soul—and the name Olivia Vance, penned in crisp, unyielding strokes.

Beside him, Victoria lunged forward, her silk veil fluttering like a wounded moth. Her polished veneer had shattered into jagged shards of panic. ""Julian, don't look at that! She’s an impostor, a grifter trying to ruin our family!"" Her manicured nails tore at the air, desperate to snatch the envelope away, but Julian pulled his arm back, his gaze locked onto the child standing at the end of the aisle.

Lucy stood soaked to the bone, water pooling on the ancient marble floor around her worn sneakers. She didn't flinch. Her hazel eyes, an exact mirror of Olivia’s, pierced straight through Julian’s hollow composure. ""She didn't spend a single dollar,"" Lucy whispered into the cavernous room, her small voice carrying over the gasp of two hundred high-society guests. ""She kept every check in a cedar box under her bed. She said blood money can never buy bread.""

Julian’s chest tightened until he couldn't draw breath. Eight years ago, Victoria had brought him an urn filled with ash, crying on his shoulder, claiming Olivia had perished in a hit-and-run in upstate New York. He had mourned. He had surrendered to the comfort Victoria offered, eventually offering her the empty shell of his heart.

""Julian, please,"" Victoria pleaded, her voice dropping to a desperate rasp as whispers erupted across the cathedral pews like wildfire. ""Think of the company. Think of us. I did what I had to do for you!""

Julian looked down at Victoria’s pristine white gown, then back at the drenched eight-year-old child standing alone in the shadows of the doorway. He let the wedding band slip from his fingers, clinking softly against the flagstones. Turning his back on the altar, Julian stepped down toward the little girl.

""Lucy,"" he murmured, his voice cracking beneath the weight of eight wasted years. ""Where is she?""

Lucy looked up, her lips trembling with cold, and pointed a trembling hand toward the storm raging outside the iron doors. ""Mom isn't in upstate, Dad. She’s waiting at the bus depot... and three men with black cars are looking for her.""
