Chapter 4 - The Safe Harbor

Julian stared at the vibrating screen of the black burner phone. The name flashed in relentless, mocking bursts: V. HALE. He swiped the screen to decline, then crushed the device beneath the heel of his oxford dress shoe until the glass cracked and the circuits snapped with a faint puff of smoke.

""We can't stay here,"" Julian said, his voice hard, every ounce of corporate hesitation stripped away. ""The police will arrive in seconds, and Victoria's family owns half the district attorneys in this city.""

He hoisted Olivia into his arms. She weighed next to nothing; her ribs pressed sharply against her threadbare coat. Lucy clutched the hem of Julian’s soaked dress shirt, matching his rapid strides as they slipped out through the rear service door into the alley, evading the flashing red and blue lights converging on the main entrance.

Julian knew he couldn't go back to his penthouse in Tribeca or use his corporate credit cards. Victoria was the chief legal officer of Hale-Vance Global; she would track every digital footprint within minutes. Instead, he led them three blocks through the rain into an underground parking structure where he kept a vintage 1970 Dodge Charger under a fake name—an old hobby car from his youth that had no GPS and no telemetry.

He settled Olivia into the leather passenger seat, wrapping her in an old wool blanket from the trunk. Lucy scrambled into the back, shivering but silent, watching her parents with solemn comprehension.

Julian turned the ignition. The V8 engine roared to life with a deep, mechanical growl that felt grounded and real compared to the fragile luxury of the cathedral he had abandoned an hour ago.

""Where are you taking us?"" Olivia asked, her voice raspy, her breathing shallow.

""My grandfather’s old hunting cabin in the Hudson Valley,"" Julian replied, pulling the car onto the wet highway, watching the rearview mirror obsessively. ""Nobody knows it exists. It’s off the grid.""

Olivia turned her head, looking back at Lucy, who had collapsed in exhaustion against the seat. ""Julian... she didn't just pay me off. She took blood samples from Lucy when she was born. Victoria has an obsession. She kept saying... she kept saying she would raise my baby when the time was right.""

Julian’s knuckles turned white on the steering wheel. ""Why would she want Lucy?""

Olivia looked out into the black night, her eyes wide with cold certainty. ""Because Victoria can't have children, Julian. And she made a deal with your father before he died: she inherits the entire trust only if she delivers an heir.""
