Chapter 9 - The High Fortress

Julian kicked open the heavy hatch of the lookout cabin, tumbling inside with Olivia just as a suppressed gunshot pinged off the steel framing beside his head. He slammed the hatch shut and threw the heavy iron bolt into place.

The glass-walled room was freezing, surrounded on four sides by the screaming storm. An old map table sat in the center, flanked by an ancient ham radio setup covered in dust and cobwebs.

Julian laid Olivia on the wooden floor, ripping off his thermal underlayer to wrap her bare feet. Her pulse was rapid and thready, her lips tinged with blue. ""Hang on, Liv. Please, just hang on.""

He rushed to the radio console. The toggle switches were rusted, but when he cranked the hand generator beside the desk, a faint green diode flickered on the interface. A low static hiss filled the small enclosure.

""Mayday, mayday,"" Julian spoke into the heavy bakelite microphone, dialing the emergency frequency. ""This is Julian Vance at the Bear Mountain lookout station. I have an injured woman and child. Armed assailants are attempting to breach our position.""

Static crackled back, broken by the howling wind outside.

Suddenly, a metallic clank echoed from the floor beneath them. Julian turned, his weapon raised. Someone was climbing the maintenance ladder on the outside of the glass enclosure, bypassing the locked hatch entirely.

A face appeared against the frosted pane—not an operative, but a woman.

Victoria Hale stood on the precarious metal balcony, dressed in a sleek cashmere winter coat, her blonde hair whipped by the gale. In her gloved hand, she held a compact automatic pistol. Her face was twisted into a grotesque mask of fury and entitlement.

""Julian!"" she shouted through the storm, raising the weapon toward the glass. ""You broke our contract!""

Julian shielded Lucy behind his back, aiming his gun at Victoria through the window. ""It was never a contract, Victoria! It was human trafficking! You stole my life!""

Victoria laughed—a shrill, manic sound that was swallowed by the wind. ""Your life was nothing until my father funded your company! You owed me a family! That little girl belongs to the Hale lineage, not this dying stray!""

With a ruthless sneer, Victoria pulled the trigger, shattering the glass pane into a thousand glittering shards.
