THE SILENT BOARDING PASS / Chapter 10 / 15

Chapter 10 - High-Altitude Chess

Marcus stared at the glowing image of Arthur Sterling on his phone screen. The hum of the twin engines outside the cockpit was a steady, rhythmic heartbeat against the dark Atlantic sky.

"Forty-eight hours in administrative detention," Marcus repeated, his baritone voice dangerously calm. "A fabricated customs alert. You’re truly emptying the armory tonight, aren’t you, Arthur?"

"I do what is necessary to survive, Marcus," Sterling retorted, taking a slow sip of his scotch. "Your mother understood that power is maintained through compromise. You never learned that lesson. You think your wealth shields you from the machinery of state security? The moment Captain Chen touches down at Heathrow, the Metropolitan Police and Border Force will seal every exit. By the time your high-priced barristers clear your name, Evelyn will already be in the ground, the board will have declared you incapacitated, and I will have executed the merger with Trans-Atlantic Air."

Marcus tilted his head slightly. "Trans-Atlantic Air? The carrier whose safety audit you personally buried last year? You’re selling my mother’s life's work to a predatory conglomerate."

"I’m cashing out, Marcus. For three billion dollars. And there is nothing you can do from seat 1A."

Sterling severed the connection, the screen instantly dropping to black.

Marcus lowered the phone. In the cockpit, Captain Chen and First Officer Reed were watching him closely. They had heard every word over the flight deck audio system.

"Sir," Julian said, his voice laced with indignation. "We can't let him do this. Can we divert? Ireland? Shannon Airport is three hours ahead. We could land on European soil before British authorities even know we've altered course."

"No," Marcus said instantly. "If we divert to Ireland, it looks like an admission of guilt. Sterling will spin it as flight from justice. We land in London. Exactly as scheduled."

Chen looked back over her shoulder, her hands resting calmly on the yoke. "Mr. Cole, if Border Force surrounds this jet at Heathrow, I am legally obligated to surrender the passenger manifest and hold everyone on board until customs officers clear the cabin."

"You are obligated to surrender the manifest of a commercial flight, Captain," Marcus replied, a razor-sharp intellect beginning to piece together an impossible maneuver. "Tell me: what is the alternate landing designation for our private corporate charter wing at RAF Northolt?"

Chen’s eyes widened. "RAF Northolt? That’s a Royal Air Force military base outside London. It handles VIP and head-of-state flights, but we’re a commercial passenger airliner! We’re flying three hundred civilians in a wide-body twin-jet!"

"This specific aircraft, tail November-Eight-Eight-Four-Sierra-Hotel, is registered under my family trust as a dual-certified civil-defense transport reserve asset," Marcus explained, stepping closer to the navigation display. "My mother negotiated that status during the transatlantic logistics expansion fifteen years ago. In the event of a corporate emergency or security compromise, the primary owner can reclassify the flight plan mid-air."

Marcus looked directly at Captain Chen. "We aren't going to let Sterling ambushing us at Heathrow. We're going to land where Arthur’s corrupt civil inspectors have zero jurisdiction."

Chen let out a low whistle, a grin touching the corners of her lips. "RAF Northolt’s runway is short for a wide-body, sir. It’s going to be a hard, heavy brake application."

"Can you do it, Sarah?" Marcus asked.

"With my eyes closed," Chen replied. "Julian, contact London Military Air Traffic Control on the secure VHF frequency. Let's see how Arthur likes chasing us onto an active military installation."

Julian reached for the frequency dial, but before his fingers made contact, the aircraft suddenly lurched violently to the left, throwing Marcus against the galley bulkhead as a deafening chime erupted through the flight deck.
