Chapter 4 - The Pushback

The heavy pneumatic door slammed shut, sealing the cabin from the outside world with a metallic thud that signaled total isolation. Outside the double-paned oval windows, the tug vehicle hummed to life, connecting to the nose gear for pushback.
Tariq stood frozen in the forward galley, his eyes locked onto the tablet screen. The red notification was not an operational memo; it was an all-fleet broadcast alert from the Airline Pilots Association executive committee.
Marcus glanced up from his phone. "What does it say, Tariq?"
The young flight attendant swallowed hard, his voice trembling as he read aloud from the confidential alert. "Sir... the Union Chair just issued a wildcat solidarity inquiry. They're demanding an emergency meeting with the board within sixty minutes, or they will advise all domestic crews to initiate a safety slowdown."
Across the aisle, the tech executive’s wife let out a sharp gasp. "A slowdown? We’ll be stranded!"
Marcus remained entirely composed. He adjusted the gold cufflinks on his wrists, his demeanor radiating the absolute stillness of a predator waiting in tall grass. "Bring me the direct satcom handset from the crew rest area, please."
"Right away, Mr. Cole," Tariq scurried back, moving with an urgency he had never felt during routine service.
Elena, the seasoned purser, stepped forward, offering Marcus a glass of sparkling water with hands that barely shook. "Mr. Cole... I’ve worked for this airline for twenty-two years. Captain Vance has been doing this for a long time. He targets gate agents, junior crew, passengers who don't look like his country club buddies. We’ve filed dozens of HR reports. They always disappeared into the legal department."
Marcus looked directly into Elena’s eyes, his expression softening with genuine gravity. "I know, Elena. That’s why I’m on this plane. My mother built this airline from three regional turboprops in the seventies. Before she passed last week, she told me that the soul of this company had been rotting from the top down. The board buried those reports to protect their legacy captains. That stops today."
Tariq returned, handing Marcus the heavy encrypted satcom handset. Marcus pressed three digits from memory and brought the receiver to his ear.
"Arthur," Marcus said without greeting, addressing Arthur Sterling, the general counsel and interim board chairman. "I assume you received the union's notification."
Over the line, even without speakerphone, the frantic voice of Sterling was audible. "Marcus! What in God's name happened on 414? You can't pull Vance off the line fifteen minutes before wheels up! The union is threatening a full eastern-seaboard work stoppage! The stock will drop ten points by market open!"
"Let it drop fifteen," Marcus said coldly. "Listen to me very carefully, Arthur. You are going to release the full video footage from the gate bridge and the cabin surveillance cameras directly to the union leadership and our press office in ten minutes. Along with Vance's last six disciplinary files that you personally suppressed."
A choking sound came from the other end of the line. "Marcus... that exposes the board to massive liability—"
"It exposes you to liability, Arthur," Marcus cut in. "You have thirty seconds to authorize the release, or my first order of business upon landing in London will be calling a special shareholder meeting to dissolve the board. Choose."
A profound pause stretched over the satellite line. Outside, the aircraft lurched gently backward as the tug began pushing Flight 414 away from the gate.
"Done," Arthur choked out before the line went dead.
Marcus handed the phone back to Tariq. "Thank you. Please take your jumpseat for taxi."

Up in the cockpit, Captain Sarah Chen’s calm voice echoed over the PA system: "Cabin crew, prepare for departure. Flight 414, number two for runway four-left."
As the twin engines began their low, vibrating spool-up, a sudden chime echoed through the first-class overhead speakers, accompanied by a frantic knock on the armored flight deck door from the inside.
