Chapter 12 - Ground Tactics

Marcus moved swiftly down the long center aisle of the wide-body jet, passing through the first-class cabin and into the crowded rows of economy. The initial panic from the violent turbulence had subsided into a tense, nervous silence, but three hundred pairs of eyes tracked the billionaire owner as he pushed through the curtain.
Near row twenty-four, Elena and Tariq were kneeling in the aisle beside an elderly man who had slumped over into his seatmate’s lap. The man’s face was an ashen, grayish-blue, his breathing shallow and rattling.
"He hit his head against the window frame during the sudden roll," Elena said, her fingers pressed firmly against the man's carotid artery. "Pulse is weak and thready. He’s in severe shock, possibly internal bleeding. We need medical personnel on the ground within thirty minutes, Mr. Cole."
Marcus knelt in the narrow aisle, not caring about the bespoke fabric of his trousers pressing against the carpet. He gently lifted the man’s wrist, feeling the faint, irregular flutter of life.
"Sir, can you hear me?" Marcus asked, his tone commanding yet deeply gentle. The man’s eyelids fluttered, but he could not focus.
A woman in the row behind leaned forward, tears streaming down her face. "That's my father. He has a pacemaker! Please, you have to get this plane on the ground!"
Marcus looked up at Elena. "Administer high-flow oxygen immediately. Tariq, get the automated external defibrillator on standby, just in case."
He stood up, looking at the frightened faces surrounding him. They weren't corporate board members or wealthy hedge-fund managers; they were ordinary families, students, and workers who had trusted his airline with their lives.
Marcus returned to the flight deck, his face carved from granite.
"Sarah," Marcus said the moment he entered. "We have a critical medical emergency in the back. Elderly passenger, head trauma and cardiac distress. We don't have the luxury of a long, scenic military descent."
Captain Chen didn't hesitate. "Understood. Julian, request an unrestricted high-speed descent profile. We’ll drop like a stone and bleed off airspeed on final approach."
Julian hit the transponder ident button and spoke into the boom mic: "London Military, Flight 414 Heavy. Upgrading status to Medical Emergency. Request unrestricted descent into Northolt, expedited vector."
"Sovereign 414, you are cleared for unrestricted descent to three thousand feet. All airspace below you is cleared. Winds at Northolt zero-niner-zero at twelve knots. The field is yours."
Chen pulled the speed brake lever back. Outside, the large composite panels on the upper wings deployed into the rushing slipstream with a deep, vibrating rumble. The aircraft nose pitched down aggressively, entering a rapid, controlled dive toward the patchwork green fields of England emerging beneath the breaking dawn clouds.
Through the forward windows, the serpentine ribbon of the River Thames came into view, shimmering under the pale gray morning light of London.

Miles away, at the military perimeter of RAF Northolt, two luxury black town cars were screeching to a halt outside the civilian liaison gate. Arthur Sterling stepped out of the first vehicle, accompanied by three men in dark suits carrying legal briefcases.
Sterling looked up into the overcast sky, checking his phone with a sinister smile. He knew the flight had declared an emergency. But what he didn't know was that the British military had already sealed the gates behind him.
