Chapter 11 - The Small Cottage by the Meadow

By the end of autumn, Julian and Claire moved into the rental apartment two streets away from Rose’s cottage. It was a modest two-bedroom unit above a local hardware store, smelling of cedar shavings and clean paint.
Julian had kept his job; though his credit was battered, his professional record remained clean because he had refused to cross the line into manipulating company ledgers. Every dollar he earned now went toward an orderly, court-approved repayment plan.
Every Sunday afternoon, Julian walked down the dirt road to his mother’s cottage.
The first Sunday they visited together, Claire carried a basket of freshly baked bread. She walked up the stone pathway, hesitated at the wooden steps, and knocked softly.
When Rose opened the door, Claire did not look away. She stepped forward and wrapped her arms around the older woman’s shoulders, holding her tightly in the cold autumn air.

"Thank you, Mom," Claire whispered against Rose’s gray hair. "Thank you for not letting us destroy ourselves."
Rose patted her back with her warm, steady hand. "Come inside, child. The tea is already on the stove."
