Chapter 9 - The Anatomy of a Sacrifice

For the next four hours, the three of them sat around the dining table. For the first time in ten years, the masks were stripped away.
Claire confessed that her brother had threatened to end his life if the debt wasn't serviced. She had pressured Julian, using guilt and the memory of her late father’s legacy, driving Julian to empty his 401(k), liquidate their savings, and finally, hide the last remaining cash with Rose so that his mother would not end up in a state nursing home when the creditors took the house.
Julian spoke of the terror he felt every morning—the dread of opening an email, the panic whenever the phone rang at the office, the humiliation of handing his mother a bag of rice like a beggar because he couldn't bear the thought of Claire knowing he had kept thirty thousand dollars back for his mother's survival.
"I thought I was being strong," Julian said, his voice breaking as he sat between the two women. "I thought a man is supposed to handle everything, absorb every blow, and never show fear."
Rose took Claire’s hand in her right hand and Julian’s in her left. Her palms were calloused, dry, and warm.

"Strength is not lying to the people you love to protect their pride," Rose said. "Strength is standing in the ruins together and telling the truth to the people who want to tear you down."
She looked at Claire. "We go to the authorities tomorrow. Arthur must face what he signed. You cannot buy a man out of his own poor character with another man’s soul."
