Chapter 14 - The Preserved Note

That evening, after Julian, Claire, and little Maya had walked back to their apartment down the lane, Rose prepared for bed.

She walked to the dresser and pulled out a small wooden box where she kept her husband’s wedding band, her old sewing thimble, and the few photographs of Julian as a boy.

Resting at the very bottom of the box was the small, torn piece of notebook paper Julian had written two years ago. The ink was still clear, though the paper had softened with age:

“I’m sorry, Mom. You did no harm. I couldn't say it in front of her. Please forgive me.”

Rose took a fountain pen from her desk. Beneath Julian’s smudged, desperate handwriting, she wrote two short lines in her neat, grandmotherly script:

“Nothing was broken that truth could not mend.

May you like

You are my son, and you are home.”

She placed the note back into the box, closed the lid, and set it on the nightstand beside her bed.
