Chapter 8 - The Threshold of Truth

Rose insisted on going to Julian’s house that evening. Julian tried to resist, but there was an immovable iron in his mother’s quiet resolve that had governed his entire childhood.

When they walked through the front door together, Claire was sitting at the dining table with papers strewn across the polished mahogany. She looked up, her eyes red and swollen. When she saw Rose entering behind Julian, her face tightened with defensive shame.

"Julian, why is she here?" Claire began, her voice cracking. "We have enough to deal with tonight."

Rose walked straight to the table. She pulled out a chair and sat down without asking. She placed her hands flat on the polished wood.

"Claire," Rose said, her voice steady and quiet. "Your brother made bad choices. You love him, and Julian loves you. But Julian is trying to carry a boulder that will crush both of you, and he is doing it in the dark."

Claire looked at Julian, then down at the table. "You told her?"

"He didn't tell me anything," Rose replied. "He put thirty thousand dollars in a grain sack and told me to get off his porch so you wouldn't see him loving his mother. That is the kind of man your shame has turned him into."

Claire’s breath hitched. She looked at Julian, whose head was bowed, his hands clenched into fists at his sides.

"I didn't ask him to do that," Claire whispered, tears suddenly spilling down her cheeks. "I didn't know he had that money."

"He didn't have it," Rose said. "He hollowed out his own future to keep you from facing the truth."
