Chapter 1 - The Weight of an Open Door

The cool autumn air slipped past the threshold, stirring the hem of Claire’s cream knit sweater. She held the brass handle of the front door, knuckles white, her knees trembling beneath her worn denim. Behind her, the rhythmic padding of tiny white Mary Janes came to a sudden halt on the pale oak floorboards. Lily stood with her head tilted, pink ribbons bobbing beside her round, flushed cheeks. Her voice was light, untroubled by the heavy shadow hanging over their home.

Claire forced her breath into a steady cadence. She had practiced this departure in the mirror, rehearsing a casual wave and a warm, breezy reassurance. Yet seeing Lily’s wide, hazel eyes washed away every rehearsed line. Claire knelt, setting down her tan leather bag so she could gather those tiny, warm hands between her own. When Lily whispered that impossible phrase—asking her mother to carry her heart—a fracture broke open deep in Claire’s chest.

She embraced the child with a ferocity that made Lily let out a soft, surprised giggle. Claire pressed her cheek against the toddler’s neck, breathing in the scent of lavender baby soap and milk. The taxi horn sounded twice from the driveway, a sharp intrusion into their sacred moment. Claire kissed Lily’s temple, stood on unsteady feet, and walked out into the gray afternoon. She kept her right hand pressed against her left ribcage, feeling as if she were carrying fragile, living porcelain tucked beneath her sweater.
