Chapter 13 - The Road That Leads Home

The highway stretched ahead like a ribbon of gray asphalt unwinding through the early spring hills. David drove with both hands planted firmly at ten and two on the steering wheel, casting frequent glances toward the passenger seat. Claire sat beside him, wearing her familiar cream knit sweater and slim blue jeans, her tan leather bag resting between her feet.
She kept her window rolled down an inch, letting the fresh, crisp breeze fill the car. It smelled of thawing dirt, pine needles, and open sky. Every familiar landmark they passed—the old water tower, the roadside diner with the flickering neon sign, the bridge over the swollen creek—felt like a personal triumph. Each mile traveled was a victory over the darkness that had tried to claim her.
As the car turned into their neighborhood, Claire felt her heart pounding violently against her ribs. She looked at her trembling hands and smoothed her sweater over her lap. She was nervous in a way she hadn't anticipated; she had spent months existing in a world of stark survival, and now she was returning to the pure, unblemished warmth of family life.
