Chapter 4 - The Sound of Footsteps in the Hallway

By late November, the house began to feel unnaturally spacious. The hallway where Claire had once knelt felt like a museum exhibit of an ordinary morning. David walked softly, haunted by the quiet, but Lily filled the emptiness with vibrant energy. She spent hours marching up and down the wooden boards, wearing her mother’s silk scarves like regal capes.
One evening, David watched from the kitchen door as Lily stopped precisely where Claire had stood by the entrance. She bent down, held out her hand to an imaginary figure, and repeated the words she had spoken weeks earlier. Her childish voice echoed against the bare walls with startling clarity. She wasn’t performing sorrow; she was rehearsing love, keeping the memory alive through sheer ritual.
David wiped his eyes on a kitchen towel before walking over to scoop her into his arms. He asked her what she was playing, and Lily patted his stubbled cheek with reassuring gravity. She told him Mommy needed practice remembering how to come through the door, so she was keeping the path warm. In that single moment, David realized that the child’s uncomplicated faith was the anchor holding their entire family from drifting out to sea.
