Chapter 5 - In the Care of Gentle Hands

Winter descended with heavy frost, glazing the windows of the hospital in intricate crystalline patterns. Claire’s dark hair had completely fallen out, replaced by a soft fleece beanie. Her cheekbones were prominent, and the simple act of sitting upright required deliberate concentration. Yet her hazel eyes, identical to Lily’s, remained fiercely illuminated from within.
Her primary nurse, a quiet woman named Martha who had spent thirty years caring for the critically ill, walked into Claire’s room one evening to adjust the IV bag. She found Claire sitting on the edge of the mattress, staring intently at a video David had sent earlier that afternoon. On the small screen, Lily was attempting to pull on her own rain boots, tumbling onto the living room rug with a burst of pure, ringing laughter.
Martha paused, resting a gentle hand on Claire’s frail shoulder. She had seen countless patients surrender to the sheer physical exhaustion of prolonged treatment, their spirits eroded by the relentless clinical routine. But Claire watched the video on an endless loop, her lips moving in silent synchronization with her daughter's laughter. Martha recognized that look; it was the stubborn, unyielding determination of a mother who refused to leave her child alone in an unfinished story.
