Chapter 10 - Midnight Summons

Robert opened the front door to find a tall woman in a dark suit standing under the porch light, holding a leather courier folder. Her badge read Special Process Server – Superior Court of Equity.

""Robert Walker?"" she asked efficiently.

""I am Robert Walker.""

""You are formally served with notice of emergency ex parte hearing, Case Number 2026-CV-8819, Lin Estate Conservatorship. Signature required for delivery confirmation.""

Robert signed the digital pad with a steady hand. ""Who expedited an ex parte hearing on a Sunday night?""

""Judge Vance-Holloway signed the emergency injunction at 6:00 PM today,"" the courier replied plainly before turning and walking back to her vehicle.

""Vance-Holloway,"" Robert repeated under his breath. He shut the door and locked the deadbolt. ""Eleanor's aunt is presiding over the probate division.""

Maya slid down against the kitchen counter, burying her head in her hands. ""It’s over, Dad. They have the court, they have her family, and they have the documents.""

""No,"" Robert said, kneeling in front of her, lifting her chin until she looked directly into his eyes. ""They have a system they think they can manipulate because they assumed I was sleeping. Your mother didn't leave her legacy unprotected, Maya. Sarah knew exactly what kind of vultures would circle if anything happened to her.""

Robert stood up and walked toward the basement door. ""Follow me.""

They descended the narrow wooden stairs into the unfinished basement. Behind a rack of unused camping gear and old filing boxes stood a reinforced steel storm shelter door that had remained bolted shut since Sarah’s death four years ago.

Robert approached the digital keypad. He hesitated for a second, then keyed in a twelve-digit alphanumeric sequence: Sarah’s birthday, followed by Maya’s, and the date the three of them had moved into the house.

The lock clicked open with a heavy hydraulic hiss.

Inside, the room was dry and illuminated by low LED emergency strips. On a central metal desk sat a solitary, offline server terminal and an old, blue hard-shell briefcases.

""What is this place?"" Maya whispered.

""This is your mother's actual archive,"" Robert said, unlocking the briefcase. ""Everything Eleanor tried to steal through the front door... your mother already backed up off-grid.""
