Chapter 8 - The Empty House

The headlights of Robert’s sedan swept across the darkened driveway of their two-story suburban home. The front door stood ajar, a sliver of yellow interior light spilling onto the manicured lawn.
Robert immediately put the car in park and stepped out, holding a hand back to signal Maya to remain inside.
""Stay here,"" he instructed quietly.
""Dad, be careful,"" Maya whispered, clutching the dashboard.
Robert approached the porch cautiously, his jaw set. The lock on the heavy oak door hadn't been picked; it had been opened with an existing key and left unlatched. As he pushed the door inward, the silence inside was heavy and unnatural.
The foyer was in disarray. The console table was stripped clean, family portraits removed from their silver frames and left lying facedown on the hardwood. In the living room, the glass display cabinets were flung open. Eleanor hadn't just packed her clothes; she had executed a frantic, calculated sweep of every liquid asset she could carry.
Robert walked into his private study. The steel wall safe behind the mahogany bookshelf hung wide open, empty. His passport, the bearer bonds, and the original velvet jewelry box containing his late wife’s emerald engagement ring were gone.
A cold rage washed over him, settling into a chilling focus. He walked back to the front porch and waved Maya inside.
""She’s gone,"" Robert said as Maya stepped through the threshold, looking around at the ransacked hallway.
""She took mom's things, didn't she?"" Maya asked, her voice flat, devoid of surprise.
""She took what she could fit in a suitcase,"" Robert replied, pulling out his phone. ""She forgot that modern theft leaves a trail.""
He dialed his personal attorney and the county sheriff’s dispatch simultaneously on his split-screen terminal. ""This is Robert Walker. I am reporting a home invasion and grand larceny at 442 Crestview Lane. The perpetrator is Eleanor Vance. She is driving a silver Mercedes SUV, license plate registration K-7-7-Omega.""

While Robert spoke to the dispatcher, Maya walked toward the kitchen island. Sitting beside the marble fruit bowl was a single, sealed white envelope addressed to Robert in Eleanor’s elegant cursive handwriting.
Maya picked it up. On the back, written in hurried red ink, were three words: Check the trust.
