Chapter 12 - Evidence in the Dark

The video continued, Sarah’s recorded voice detailing the financial countermeasures she had quietly put in place during the final months of her life.

""Attached to this drive is a forensic audit,"" Sarah explained calmly. ""It details Eleanor Vance’s previous corporate affiliations, including two prior estates in Nevada where conservatorships were awarded to her family's legal network and liquidated within eighteen months. Robert... if you are standing beside our daughter right now, take these files to the Federal Attorney in the Western District. Do not fight her in probate. Fight her in criminal court.""

The screen transitioned into an automated download sequence, exporting thousands of unredacted transaction logs onto the twin hardware drives.

""She target-hunted me,"" Robert whispered, horror creeping into his voice. ""After Sarah died, Eleanor showed up at every fundraiser, every industry conference... she staged every interaction until I let her in.""

""She didn't just want the money,"" Maya said, watching the transaction trails light up on the display. ""She wanted to completely erase us. That's why she made sure you didn't hear my name called today. She wanted me demoralized enough to walk away without fighting back.""

Maya turned from the terminal, her tears gone, replaced by an unmistakable fire that mirrored her mother’s fierce determination. ""Dad, we don't have to wait until nine o'clock.""

""No,"" Robert said, checking his watch. It was 1:15 AM. ""We don't.""

He dialed his mobile again, this time selecting a private contact from his emergency business registry: Marcus Reed, a retired federal prosecutor who now served as general counsel for his engineering firm.

""Marcus,"" Robert said when the line connected on the third ring. ""Wake up. We have the full forensic ledger on the Vance network, stamped by Sarah before she passed. I need an emergency federal stay issued before eight o'clock.""

""Robert?"" Marcus’s gravelly voice snapped to attention immediately. ""If you have Sarah's certified forensics, that isn't a state probate matter anymore. That’s wire fraud and interstate racketeering. Where are you?""

""We're coming to your office right now,"" Robert replied.

He shut down the terminal, grabbed the two encrypted drives, and handed one to Maya. ""Take your mother's legacy. Let's go finish this.""
