Chapter 11 - The Patriarch's Terms

The cold voice of Arthur Mercer vibrated through the clinic's cheap acoustic ceiling tiles like an electric charge. In the surgical room, Dr. Thorne was already bagging the infant by hand, the rhythmic puffing of the silicone mask the only sound anchoring the newborn to life. Fifty seconds remained before irreversible neurological decay would set in.
Ethan picked up the administrative receiver mounted to the wall. "Call off your men, Arthur. The child is your grandson. Does blood mean nothing to you anymore?"
A dry, aristocratic chuckle came over the line. "Blood is an investment, Ethan. One manages it, or one goes bankrupt. That girl represents an administrative and legal catastrophic liability to our family name. The Vance family has already mobilized thirty lawyers to file breach of contract suits against our manufacturing divisions because of your little stunt at the altar."
"I don't care about the contracts!" Ethan roared into the microphone, his polished veneer completely gone.
"You will care when you are living in a federal penitentiary for corporate embezzlement, my boy," Arthur responded, his tone smooth, almost pitying. "Every dollar you spent securing that girl's silence last year came from an escrow account registered under Clara's foundation. If I release that audit, you are finished. Clara is finished. And this clinic will be shuttered by the state police before dawn."
Clara leaned close to the intercom, her voice pure venom. "You won't do that, Arthur. Because if you release that audit, I release the video of you meeting with the Vance logistics directors three nights ago to short-sell our own merger stock."
The line went dead silent. For five agonizing seconds, the only sound was the wind screaming outside the building.
"You have five minutes, Clara," Arthur finally whispered, his voice stripped of all warmth. "Ethan steps out with the child, or nobody leaves that compound alive."

Ethan did not drop the receiver. He looked through the surgical glass. Dr. Thorne was looking at him, holding a syringe, shaking his head.
"The override worked," Dr. Thorne shouted through the partition. "The bypass pump is engaged! But Ethan... look at the monitor. His heart isn't beating on its own. The machine is doing all the work."
