Chapter 9 - The Ghost Clinic

The sedan skidded to a halt in front of a low-slung, unmarked building constructed of red brick and weathered timber. It looked more like a remote veterinary facility than a private medical retreat, but the tinted windows and heavy perimeter fence told a different story. Clara killed the engine and headlights simultaneously, leaving them cloaked in the absolute silence of the mountain forest.
"Dr. Thorne is inside," Clara said, stepping out and instantly heading for the steel service door. She punched a six-digit code into the keyless entry pad.
Ethan did not wait for an invitation. He gathered Elena in his arms, while she clutched the limp infant to her chest. As they crossed the threshold, the harsh white light of an emergency intake bay blinded them. An elderly man with a shock of white hair and deep frown lines met them with a wheeled gurney.
"Lay the mother down," Dr. Thorne commanded, his voice devoid of pleasantries. He immediately snatched the infant from Elena's arms, his fingers checking the pulse point on the baby's inner thigh. "Hypothermic. Cyanotic. The infant's pulse is under forty beats per minute. Nurse, get sixty milligrams of epinephrine ready and prep the pediatric warmer!"
Elena cried out, her arms reaching empty into the air as the medical team rushed the child toward the adjacent surgical theatre. Ethan caught her hands, his thumbs stroking her cold, trembling palms. "Stay with me, Elena. Look at me. They have him. He's in the room."
"He was so quiet, Ethan," she wept, her voice disintegrating into raw, animal grief. "On the drive... he just stopped fighting."
Ethan turned to Dr. Thorne, who was barking orders through the glass partition. "Doctor! Clara said you needed Arthur Mercer's biometric clearance to run the neonatal bypass unit. Is that true?"
May you like
Dr. Thorne paused, his hands covered in sterile latex, looking at Ethan with cold, unforgiving eyes. "The machine belongs to Mercer Medical Logistics. It requires an encrypted corporate override to bypass the regional licensing lock. Without that key, the pump will shut down after precisely sixty seconds of operation."
Before Ethan could process the ultimatum, the facility's master power died, plunging the entire clinic into complete, suffocating blackness.
