Chapter 4 - The Price of Silence

The security guard stood motionless, his eyes scanning Ethan’s tailored tuxedo with cynical detachment before settling on Elena. "Mr. Ethan Mercer?" the man asked, his voice rough and devoid of professional courtesy. "Your father is waiting for you downstairs in the executive lounge. He suggests you come down quietly before the private security team handles this wing."

Ethan stepped in front of the hospital bed, his frame tensing as his fists clenched at his sides. "Get out. If you step another inch into this room, I will break your jaw."

The guard smiled faintly, showing no sign of intimidation. "I’m just delivering a message, sir. Mr. Arthur Mercer is currently on a conference call with the hospital's chief of surgery. The hospital board receives forty percent of its philanthropic endowment from the Vance Foundation. Your future father-in-law is on that call as well."

Elena gasped softly, pulling the baby closer against her chest. The infant whimpered, a fragile, reedy sound that tore at Ethan’s ribs. The reality of the trap closed around them with ruthless precision. If Ethan walked away from Clara, Clara’s father would yank the funding that kept the surgical department functioning. The pediatric specialist who was supposed to save this child's life would be ordered to prioritize other cases.

"Ethan," Elena whispered, terror finally cracking her stoic facade. "They're going to kill him. They won't even have to touch him; they'll just delay the operating schedule until his heart gives out."

Ethan looked at the guard, whose eyes flicked to the watch on his wrist. "You have five minutes to make an appearance, Mr. Mercer. After that, your father instructs the administrative staff to discharge the patient under medical non-compliance."

Ethan reached into his pocket and produced his personal phone, but the screen was dead. The internal signal in the wing had been completely blocked by a localized jammer. He looked back at Elena, whose eyes were wide with a mother's raw, animal despair.

"Don't let them touch him," Elena pleaded.

Ethan turned back to the guard, his voice terrifyingly calm. "Tell my father I'm coming down. But tell him to prepare the surgical paperwork first."

As the guard stepped backward and let the door swing shut, Ethan grabbed the emergency pen from the chart table and looked toward the adjoining window.
