Chapter 3 - Blood and Betrayal

Ethan stepped closer to the edge of the bed, his knuckles turning white as he rested them against the stainless steel railing. The baby was impossibly small, a delicate scrap of life fighting for breath under the hum of an overhead warmer. A faint blue hue tinted the infant’s tiny fingernails. The sight pierced through the haze of Ethan's panic, replacing it with an unfamiliar, primordial ache that struck straight at his core.
"Why didn't you tell me?" Ethan demanded, his voice trembling between anger and heartbreak. "Why did you run away into the dark? Did you honestly think I wouldn't have chosen you?"
Elena let out a short, hollow laugh that hitched in her throat. She closed her eyes for a second, drawing in a ragged breath that made the monitor on the wall stutter. "Chosen me? Your father sat in my apartment the night before I left, Ethan. He didn't offer me money to leave. He brought photographs of my younger brother's university campus, alongside a folder detailing the debts my father died running from. He told me that if you did not marry Clara Vance, every single one of those debts would be called in at midnight."
Ethan recoiled, feeling as though he had been struck with an iron bar. His father, Arthur Mercer, had orchestrated the union with Clara to save the family conglomerate from a quietly catastrophic insolvency. Ethan had known the business was fragile, but he had never fathomed the predatory extortion operating in the background of his own courtship.
"He threatened you?" Ethan whispered.

"He promised me that if I ever reached out to you, my brother would disappear before his graduation," Elena replied, opening her eyes. They burned with a fierce, protective fire. "I stayed away for nine months. I was going to carry this secret to my grave. But this morning, the pediatric cardiologist told me our son needs an arterial switch surgery before tomorrow morning, or his lungs will collapse. The procedure costs half a million dollars, Ethan. They wouldn't touch him without immediate clearance."
Before Ethan could answer, the door of Room 407 clicked. A man dressed in a charcoal security blazer stepped into the doorway, his hand resting conspicuously near his inside breast pocket.
