Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

Arthur Vance stepped into the penthouse suite like a man who believed the world was deeded to him in perpetuity. Tall, silver-haired, and dressed in a bespoke charcoal three-piece suit, his aristocratic sneer was legendary along Chicago’s Gold Coast. Behind him, Claire stood pale and mute, her emerald gown catching the harsh chandelier light.
""Dominic,"" Arthur boomed, his voice carrying the haughty timber of old money. ""Your staff said you were engaged, but we have five contracts awaiting signature before tomorrow's press conference. What is the meaning of—""
Arthur stopped dead in his tracks as Dominic emerged from the nursery hallway, stepping firmly in front of the door. But before Dominic could seal the barrier, Elena walked out behind him, serene and radiant despite the tension crackling through the room.
Arthur’s eyes drifted from Elena’s composed face down to her unmistakable silhouette. A cold, predatory stillness descended upon him. ""Well, well. Elena Morris. The wayward assistant. I thought Dominic had dismissed you months ago.""
""Arthur, leave,"" Dominic warned, his voice dropping into the low, menacing register that usually sent competitors scrambling for legal cover. The veins along his tattooed neck tightened. ""This is private property. Take Claire home. We will handle our business tomorrow.""
""Business?"" Arthur chuckled, a humorless, dry sound. He glanced at Claire, whose eyes were fixed on the floor, wet with silent tears. ""You entered a binding covenant with my family, Dominic. You promised our firms would merge, that your logistics fleet would clear my debt, and that Claire would be your wife. And now I find you keeping a pregnant mistress tucked away in your private quarters?""
""She is not a mistress,"" Dominic said with absolute finality.
""Then what is she?"" Arthur demanded, stepping forward, his arrogance blinding him to the violent tension coiling in Dominic’s frame. ""A liability. A peasant trying to secure a payout. If you think I’ll allow my family’s name to be disgraced by your reckless—""
Dominic closed the distance in a split second, seizing Arthur by the lapels of his immaculate coat and pinning him against the floor-to-ceiling glass. Beyond Arthur's widening eyes, the street below was a dizzying drop.
""Choose your next words with absolute reverence,"" Dominic snarled, inches from Arthur’s face. ""Because neither your name, nor your money, nor this city can save you if you speak of her or my child like that again.""

""Dominic! Stop!""
The cry didn't come from Arthur, nor from Claire. It was Elena. Her voice wasn't hysterical; it was firm, mournful, and filled with a quiet authority that severed Dominic's rage at its root.
