Chapter 6 - Morning Shadows

Dawn broke over Lake Michigan in ribbons of slate-gray and muted gold. Dominic had not slept. He had spent the remaining hours of the night in his study, fielding panicked calls from his legal team and financial advisors. The fallout had begun. Arthur Vance was not a man to lick his wounds in silence; within hours of leaving the penthouse, rumors had already surfaced across financial tabloids about Dominic’s sudden instability, a broken engagement, and whispers of financial irregularities within his shipping consortium.
Marcus, Dominic’s chief of operations and a man who had known him since their days growing up in South Side tenements, walked into the penthouse without knocking, his expression grim.
""Arthur’s calling in every favor,"" Marcus said, dropping a thick folder onto the kitchen island. ""He’s trying to freeze our maritime clearance in Baltimore and New York. If those cargo lines stall for forty-eight hours, we face breach of contract penalties north of thirty million. Dominic, what are you doing? Claire was the bridge. You blow that bridge, and we’re back in the mud.""
Elena entered the kitchen, wearing a simple cardigan over her maternity dress. Marcus immediately paused, his hardened features softening with genuine surprise.
""Elena,"" Marcus said, dipping his head with unexpected warmth. ""You're... here.""
""Good morning, Marcus,"" she said calmly, reaching for the electric kettle. ""I see Dominic's empire is on fire already.""
""It's not an empire,"" Dominic said, stepping out of the study, holding an encrypted phone. ""It's a business. And if the business depends on selling my life and Claire's future to appease a dinosaur like Arthur Vance, then it deserves to crumble.""
Marcus stared at his long-time friend, utterly bewildered. ""Who are you, and what have you done with Dominic Rossi? You spent fifteen years taking bullets and evading wiretaps to build this corporation!""
""I spent fifteen years running from poverty and fear,"" Dominic replied, his voice calm, clear, and stripped of the frantic adrenaline that had driven him for decades. ""Every dollar I stacked was just a sandbag against a flood that was never coming. Marcus, call the harbor authorities. Offer them full federal compliance audits. Open our books. If Arthur wants to play dirty, we go entirely transparent. We have nothing to hide anymore.""

Marcus shook his head in disbelief, but there was a flicker of respect in his eyes. ""You're playing Russian roulette with the market, boss.""
""No,"" Dominic said, looking past Marcus to where Elena stood by the window, the morning sunlight bathing her in warmth. ""I'm finally stepping out of the game.""
