Chapter 8 - The Cost of Courage

The silence in the penthouse was thick with reverence. Elena rose slowly from her chair, walking toward Claire. Without a word, she extended her hands and took Claire’s cold, trembling fingers into her own.

""Thank you, Claire,"" Elena said, her voice rich with deep, heartfelt empathy. ""You didn't have to be brave for us. You chose to be.""

Claire swallowed hard, looking down at their joined hands. ""I hated you, you know. For months, whenever Dominic grew distant or stared off into nothing, I knew it wasn't business. I knew there was a ghost in his mind. But seeing you last night... I realized you weren't a ghost. You were the only real thing in his life. And you deserve to raise that baby without fear.""

Dominic stood by the window, feeling a profound sense of humility wash over him. He had spent his entire adulthood believing that safety was forged through violence, dominance, and cold financial leverage. Yet here, in his living room, two women were dismantling an empire's worth of threats armed with nothing more than raw integrity and selfless truth.

""Claire,"" Dominic said, stepping closer, his demeanor humbled. ""These files will protect my company, but they will leave you destitute if the authorities seize your family's assets. I won't let you be destroyed by your father's sins. I will set up an independent trust in your name—clean, untouched by Vance Enterprises or my own firms. You will never have to answer to anyone again.""

Claire offered a small, weary smile. ""Keep your money, Dominic. Just pay back the pension fund my father robbed. Let those working families keep their homes. That’s all the redemption this city needs.""

She pulled her trench coat tighter and turned toward the elevator. ""Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a statement to deliver to the United States Attorney's Office.""

As the elevator doors closed behind Claire, Dominic turned to Elena. The world was shifting under their feet, moving away from shadows and fear toward something entirely untested: peace.
