Chapter 9 - Dismantling the Fortress

Over the next two weeks, Chicago’s high-finance sector weathered an earthquake. Arthur Vance was arrested at his private hangar at O'Hare International Airport while attempting to board a chartered flight to Zurich. The headlines were sensational, but Dominic remained conspicuously absent from the press conferences.

Instead of gloating, Dominic used his vast resources exactly as Claire had requested. Working alongside federal regulators, he restructured his shipping conglomerate, liquidating redundant assets to backstop the compromised pension funds of Vance Enterprises' workers. Wall Street called it erratic, foolish, even weak. But on the ground, thousands of dockworkers, warehouse staff, and administrative clerks kept their livelihoods.

In the penthouse, a different transformation was taking place.

Dominic had dismissed his armed detail. The heavy, tinted security glass remained, but the curtains were drawn open, letting in the cool, crisp autumn air. The study, once filled with tactical maps, encrypted communication hubs, and surveillance feeds, was cleared out. Painters had been hired to replace the imposing dark mahogany walls with soft, warm tones of linen and sage.

Dominic spent his afternoons assembling furniture. His hands, scarred and inked, struggled with wooden dowels and hex wrenches, a sight that made Elena laugh with genuine delight from her rocking chair.

""The feared Dominic Rossi, baffled by an imported bookshelf,"" she teased, sipping warm milk.

""The instructions are in four languages, none of which are English,"" Dominic grumbled playfully, wiping sweat from his brow, his face smudged with dust.

He sat back on the floor, looking up at her. Her pregnancy was in its final weeks now; her face was fuller, her glow undeniable, though fatigue lingered in the soft circles beneath her eyes.

""You look happy,"" she observed, her voice quiet.

May you like

Dominic paused, holding the wrench loosely in his hand. He looked around the sunny room, then back to Elena. ""I don't think I've ever known what happiness was before this. I thought happiness was winning. Winning an argument, winning a contract, taking revenge. But this... this quiet... it feels like I'm finally breathing after holding my breath underwater for forty years.""

Elena reached down, resting her hand on his dark, cropped hair. ""It's called peace, Dominic. It takes a lot more strength to maintain peace than it ever did to wage a war.""
