Chapter 15 - The Unfinished Blueprint

Three months later, the first heavy snow of December blanketed the historic district of Boston.

Inside the architectural offices of Vance & Associates Preservation Consultants, the large corner windows overlooked the snow-dusted brick rowhouses of Beacon Hill. The modern office was quiet, save for the soft clicking of keyboards and the faint rustle of drafting paper.

In the center of the principal office stood the hand-carved white oak drafting desk. Its golden grain caught the warm afternoon light, radiating the rich scent of beeswax and natural timber.

Elena Vance leaned over the desk, using an unsharpened carpenter’s pencil to sketch preliminary restorations for a 19th-century municipal library. Beside her blueprints rested a small wooden carving of a wren, perched next to her brass scale ruler.

Her phone chimed on the corner of the table. A video call request flashed on the screen: Dad (Sawmill Workshop).

Elena touched the screen and propped it against the raised lip of the desk.

The screen lit up with the glowing interior of the mill’s wood shop. Marcus was wearing a heavy flannel shirt, his gray hair tied back, his cheeks flushed with healthy color. In the background behind him, two young apprentices from the valley tech school were carefully learning how to set the teeth of an antique timber saw.

""Did the desk hold up against the city movers?"" Marcus asked with a dry grin.

""Not a scratch,"" Elena smiled, turning the camera slightly to show him the hand-rubbed wood glowing under her studio lamps. ""It’s the most admired piece in the entire building. Everyone wants to know who the master craftsman is.""

""Tell them he's busy until spring,"" Marcus said, gesturing over his shoulder toward the apprentices. ""These kids don't know the difference between white pine and spruce yet. Got a lot of teaching to do before the thaw.""

""I'll be there on Friday for Christmas, Dad,"" Elena said, her voice filled with quiet peace. ""I’m bringing the updated conservation maps for the lower valley.""

May you like

""Flume's running clear, Elena,"" Marcus replied softly, his hazel eyes meeting hers through the screen with total warmth. ""Road's plowed. We’ll leave the light on by the river.""

Elena hung up the call and looked back down at her blueprints. Outside the window, snow fell silently across the city roofs, but inside, rooted upon the honest timber beneath her hands, she was finally home."
