Chapter 6 - The Architect's Eye

Morning broke over the valley with crisp clarity. Frost coated the wild ferns along the riverbank, and the roar of the stream through the mill’s tailrace was loud and constant.

Elena rose early, brewing a fresh pot of black coffee and clearing the large drafting table in the main room. She pinned the town’s proposed demolition schematics side by side with the historic 1882 engineering plans. Armed with her scale ruler, mechanical pencils, and architectural code manuals, she began dissecting the municipal claim.

Marcus sat at the opposite end of the table, his injured leg elevated on a padded stool. He observed her in silence for an hour, watching the practiced precision with which she drafted cross-sections.

""The town engineer claims the flume foundation has experienced significant scouring,"" Elena said, pointing her pencil at a municipal survey map. ""They say it threatens the structural stability of the county bridge fifty yards downstream.""

Marcus leaned forward, squinting through a pair of wire-rimmed reading glasses. ""The town engineer didn't check the bed material. He assumed it's river gravel. It's not. The flume rests directly on solid schist bedrock. It hasn't moved an eighth of an inch since the flood of 1938.""

Elena paused, looking up at him. ""Do you have core samples?""

""Down in the turbine cellar,"" Marcus said. ""I drilled them eight years ago when the state inspectors came through. Marked, labeled, and sealed in paraffin wax.""

""Why didn't you send them to the planning board?""

""Because the planning board is chaired by developers who want to route water runoff into the valley for a strip mall,"" Marcus replied dryly. ""They don't read letters from eccentric old woodworkers. But they have to read certified structural impact filings from registered state preservationists.""

Elena looked at her father, realizing the subtle brilliance of what he had done. He hadn't called her back just to fix his paperwork or clean his kitchen. He had called her because she possessed the exact professional authority needed to fight the battle he could no longer fight alone.

""Let's get those core samples,"" Elena said, standing up. ""We have four days before the public hearing.""
