Chapter 5 - Shadows on Rough Pine

The creak of floorboards behind her broke the stillness. Elena snapped the ledger shut and turned around.

Marcus stood balanced precariously on his cane, leaning heavily against the doorframe of the archive room, breathing with visible difficulty. His expression was guarded, his eyes fixed on the canvas-wrapped book in her hands.

""You shouldn't be on your feet,"" Elena said, her voice dropping.

""You shouldn't be digging through private corners,"" he countered, though there was no anger in his voice—only a fragile, exposed exhaustion.

""Why didn't you ever send any of these?"" Elena held up the book. ""You let me believe you walked away without looking back. For fifteen years, Mom thought you hated our lives in Boston.""

Marcus moved slowly toward a workbench, lowering his weight against the sturdy oak top. The shadow cast by the drafting lamp carved deep hollows across his features.

""Your mother wanted a life that wasn't tied to sawdust, debts, and broken machinery,"" Marcus said quietly. ""She was right. I was stubborn. I poured every dollar into this mill while the roof over our house leaked. When she asked for a divorce, I knew that if I fought her, I'd only pull both of you down with me.""

""So you just stopped showing up?"" Elena asked, tears pricking the corners of her eyes despite her best efforts. ""You thought erasing yourself was honorable?""

""I thought leaving you room to grow without carrying my failures was the only decent thing I had left,"" Marcus answered. ""Every time I picked up the telephone, I knew whatever I said would sound like an excuse. You were building an honorable life. Look at you. You save history for a living.""

""I save old buildings because I couldn't save my own family, Dad,"" Elena said, the raw truth hitting the quiet air like an anvil.

Marcus closed his eyes, his breathing ragged. For the first time, he looked entirely stripped of his stoic armor. ""I kept the mill because I thought... if I preserved this one place, maybe one day you'd have a reason to come back.""
