Chapter 14 - The Narrow Passage

Mark pushed Sarah and Leo deeper into the darkness of the pipe. ""Run. Don't stop until you see the tower lights.""

Sarah hesitated for half a heartbeat, looking at him with an agonized mixture of love and fury, before taking Leo’s hand and sprinting into the black corridor. Leo looked back over his shoulder once, his hazel eyes wide and shining in the dim light, before the shadows swallowed them.

Mark turned to face the entrance.

Three operatives were moving in tactical formation, their weapon lights piercing the gloom. Mark leaned around the curve of the pipe, leveled his Glock with steady, two-handed precision, and fired his final three rounds.

The first shot shattered the lead operative's flashlight; the second found center-mass beneath his vest collar; the third ricocheted off the concrete wall, sending high-velocity copper fragments into the second man's shoulder.

The operatives fell back with cries of alarm, unleashing a hail of return fire that ricocheted wildly within the enclosed concrete tunnel. Mark threw himself flat into the muddy water, feeling the supersonic shockwaves tearing through the air inches above his spine.

Empty pistol locked back on an empty chamber. Mark tossed the useless weapon aside and drew the heavy steel tactical knife from his belt.

He rose to his feet in the dark, his silhouette backlit by the distant flashing red lights of the burning truck on the highway, and took a deep, steady breath of smoke and iron.
