Chapter 15 - The Dawn at the Tracks

The automated relay tower stood against the gray pre-dawn sky like a steel skeleton. Sarah slammed her shoulder against the maintenance shed door, bursting inside. The room was humming with the low, steady vibration of server racks and electronic relays.

Her hands shook violently as she inserted the titanium drive into the primary console port. A green prompt blinked on the CRT monitor: EXECUTE BROADCAST (Y/N)?

She slammed her fist onto the return key.

Instantly, streams of encrypted code cascaded down the display like green waterfalls. Across the country, thousands of secure terminals, media desks, and federal justice servers began receiving the unredacted truth of Project Vanguard.

A heavy, metallic thud outside the door made her freeze.

Sarah grabbed a heavy steel wrench from the workbench, her heart hammering against her ribs, and pulled Leo behind her back.

The shed door swung slowly inward on creaking hinges.

Silhouetted against the pale rose light of the rising sun stood a battered figure. Mark leaned heavily against the frame, his clothes shredded, his side soaked in blood, his face bruised and pale—but standing upright. He dropped his ruined knife onto the threshold.

""Daddy!"" Leo broke from Sarah’s grasp, throwing his arms around Mark’s waist.

Mark sank slowly to his knees, wrapping his arms around his son with the last shred of his strength, burying his face in the boy's hair as tears carved trails through the mud on his cheeks. Sarah collapsed beside them, holding both of them as the sun broke over the pine trees, warming their battered bodies.

Then, from the dashboard console on the tower wall, an emergency alert broadcast crackled over the radio frequency:

""Attention all state units. The Director of Vanguard has been apprehended. However, Rogue Unit Zero has deployed an off-grid contingency team to Sector 4. Repeat: they are operating without radio contact and have orders to eliminate all witnesses...""

Down on the rail line below, the sharp, deliberate snap of a sniper rifle chambering a high-caliber round broke the morning silence."
