Chapter 10 - Cornered

The blinding glare of the high beams erased the shadows of the alley, pinning Julian, Claire, and the sedan against the brick wall. Heavy car doors opened in unison, and four men dressed in tactical security gear stepped into the beam of light. Behind them, walking with calm, calculated precision, was Arthur Vance.

""Fascinating deduction, Miss Chen,"" Vance’s amplified voice echoed through the narrow space. ""Or should I say, Miss Dupont? Either way, industrial espionage and corporate defamation are serious federal offenses.""

Julian stepped in front of his car door, shielding Lily completely from sight. ""Let them go, Vance. This is between you and me.""

""I’m afraid not, Julian,"" Vance said smoothly, stopping twenty feet away while his men fanned out, their hands resting on holstered tasers and batons. ""You chose to break a legally binding custody settlement and run from court-appointed officers. By law, Lily belongs in state-supervised custody until Judge Montgomery determines your fitness as a parent.""

""Judge Montgomery is an accomplice to murder!"" Julian shouted, his fury boiling over. ""We have the key. We have Elena’s evidence!""

Vance smiled, a thin, cold expression that made Julian's stomach drop. ""A key to what, Julian? A safe deposit box at the First National Bank? The box that was subpoenaed and emptied two hours ago under a court order signed by the good judge?""

Julian felt the ground vanish beneath his feet. Rebecca had anticipated every move. They had already raided Elena's bank records.

""You see,"" Vance continued, pulling a set of silver handcuffs from his coat pocket. ""The Montgomery family does not leave loose ends. You are broke, discredited, and now, an armed fugitive resisting arrest. Step away from the child.""

Lily's small voice suddenly rose from inside the shattered car window, cutting through the standoff. ""That’s not where Mommy’s box is.""

Vance’s smug smile faltered for a fraction of a second.
